Canning and then some

A few posts back I mentioned pears, apples and peaches. Well that fruit is now all nicely bottled up and sitting on my shelves. In the middle of all that I got 40lbs of green beans for free and at least 25 lbs of delicious dark purple concord grapes. The kids all helped out cleaning and snapping green beans. David even pitched in and helped when he got home from work. I had no idea how much work green beans could be. Those grapes got juiced in a steam juicer and turned into grape jelly. I thought for sure I wouldn't like grape jelly(I don't like store bought) but wow that stuff is amazing!

I'm on my way to Leavenworth this weekend and hope to bring back some apples to make sauce and apple pie filling.
There is a deep satisfaction to putting up your own fruits and vegetables. Its almost therapeutic for me. I loved standing for hours pealing and coring those pears. I got lots of thinking done and some how or another my house did not fall down around me while I took hours to put it all up. I am well on my way to our families food storage.
